Secondary School Admissions Exams

There are few things as confusing as navigating the network of all of the different secondary school standardized testing offerings available. We at Always Sunny Tutoring hear you!

At Always Sunny Tutoring, we can help differentiate between all of the different options, and work with the student and family to identify the best test(s) that will allow the student to be best positioned for admissions into secondary school.

Three of the most commonly-taken tests that students consider are the ISEE, SSAT, and SHSAT. Fortunately, all three tests share some similarities and overlap in terms of content, which allows for simultaneous preparation for multiple tests; however, acknowledging that there are several distinct differences between the tests as well, we additionally work with students to develop specific strategies that allow students to leverage distinct techniques tailored for each individual test - as well as for each individual student.

ISEE

The Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is one of the three widely-accepted secondary school standardized tests. The ISEE consists of four different sections which focus on Math (Quantitative Reasoning & Mathematical Achievement) and English (Verbal Reasoning & Reading Comprehension).

The ISEE is offered at three levels based on grade:

  • Lower Level (entering grades 5-6)
  • Middle Level (entering grades 7-8)
  • Upper Level (entering grades 9-12)

You can find more detailed information on the test can be found at the official ISEE website.

SSAT

The Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) is another of the three established secondary school tests. The SSAT shares the greatest similarity with the traditional "old" SAT exam, although it is not an identical twin. The SSAT covers three main topics (through four graded sections), with English broken into Verbal & Reading Comprehension and Math (Quantitative Analysis).

The SSAT is offered at three levels based on grade:

  • Lower Level (entering grades 4-5)
  • Middle Level (entering grades 6-8)
  • Upper Level (entering grades 9-12)

You can find more detailed information on the test can be found at the official SSAT website.

SHSAT

The SHSAT is changing its format as of Fall 2017 to reflect the format of the SSAT and ISEE exams. Starting in Fall 2017, the SHSAT will focus on two main topics, English Language Arts (ELA), which consists of Sentence Editing/Revision (new from 2016) and Reading Comprehension (same as before), and Math, although the Math section will now contain 5 "grid-in" questions (rather than multiple choice).

Due to the nature of the test, it is intended for students entering high school (entering grade 9 or 10).

You can find more detailed information on the test can be found at the official SHSAT website.
